Our Work: City of Emeryville Rotten City Block Party – Event Promotion

The Organization

The City of Emeryville lies on the east shore of San Francisco Bay between Oakland and Berkeley at the confluence of several major freeways. The city is just over one square mile. The resident population was 12,905 as of 2020.

For a geographically small city, it's packed with industry, art, hotels and shopping, and is the home to brands such as Peet's Coffee & Tea, Pixar, Clif Bar, Chiron and Trader Vic's.

In the early 20th century, Emeryville was as well known for its gambling houses and bordellos as it was for its booming industrial sector. Earl Warren, then Alameda County district attorney, later California governor and Chief Justice of the United States, described it as "the rottenest city on the Pacific Coast". During Prohibition and the Great Depression, Emeryville was a site of numerous speakeasies, racetracks and brothels; it became known as a somewhat lawless red light center. Today the name "Rotten City" is used affectionately by the city, businesses and the Rotten City Arts District.

The Project

In partnership with SF on the Bay, Communications Team developed event branding for the 2019 Rotten City Block Party, along with marketing materials and assets for use in print, signage, web, advertising, email and social.
